Shinjuku

Shinjuku (新宿区, Shinjuku-ku?) is one of the 23 special wards of Tokyo, Japan. It is a major commercial and administrative center, housing the busiest train station in the world (Shinjuku Station) and the Tokyo Metropolitan Government Building, the administration center for the government of Tokyo.

As of 2008, the ward has an estimated population of 312,418 and a density of 17,140 persons per km². The total area is 18.23 km².[2]

As of October 1, 2005, 29,353 non-Japanese with 107 different nationalities were registered in Shinjuku.[citation needed]

[edit] GeographySurrounding Shinjuku are six other wards: Chiyoda to the east; Bunkyo and Toshima to the north; Nakano to the west, and Shibuya and Minato to the south[citation needed]. In addition, Nerima is only a hundred meters away[citation needed]. The highest point in Shinjuku is Hakoneyama (箱根山?) in Toyama Park at 44.6 m[citation needed]. The lowest point is 4.2 m near Iidabashi[citation needed].

[edit] Neighbourhoods
Street level in ShinjukuAlthough the area immediately surrounding Shinjuku Station is home to hotels, department stores, specialist electronic and camera shops, cinemas, restaurants, and bars, the rest of the city is a mix of residential with commercial areas concentrated around railway stations[citation needed].

Notable areas of Shinjuku include:

Ichigaya: A commercial area in eastern Shinjuku, site of the Ministry of Defense.
Golden Gai: An area of tiny shanty-style bars and clubs. Musicians, artists, actors and directors gather here, and the ramshackle walls of the bars are literally plastered with movie posters.
Kabukichō: A red-light district well-known for its bars, restaurants, and sex-related establishments.
Kagurazaka: One of Tokyo's last remaining hanamachi or geisha districts[citation needed].
Nishi-Shinjuku: Home to Tokyo's largest concentration of skyscrapers. Several of the tallest buildings in Tokyo are located in this area, including the Tokyo Metropolitan Government Building, KDDI Building and Park Tower. Located west of Shinjuku Station.
Ōkubo: Tokyo's best-known Korean district[citation needed].
Shinjuku Gyoen is a large park, 58.3 hectares, 3.5 km in circumference, blending Japanese traditional, English Landscape and French Formal style gardens.
Shinjuku Ni-chōme: Tokyo's best-known gay district[citation needed].
Takadanobaba and Waseda: The area between Waseda University, one of the most prestigious private universities in Japan, and Takadanobaba Station is a major residential and nightlife area for students[citation needed].
Yotsuya: An upscale residential and commercial district; the Arakichō area is well-known for its many small restaurants, bars, and izakaya.
[edit] History
Shinjuku at night. In 1634, during the Edo period, as the outer moat of the Edo Castle was built, a number of temples and shrines moved to the Yotsuya area on the western edge of Shinjuku. In 1698, Naitō Shinjuku had developed as a new (shin) station (shuku or juku) on the Kōshū Kaidō, one of the major highways of that era. Naitō was a daimyo whose mansion stood in the area; his land is now a public park, the Shinjuku Gyoen.

In 1920, the town of Naitō-Shinjuku that comprised large parts of present-day Shinjuku, parts of Nishi-Shinjuku and Kabukichō was integrated into Tokyo City. Shinjuku began to develop into its current form after the Great Kantō earthquake in 1923, since the seismically stable area largely escaped the devastation. Consequently, West Shinjuku is one of the few areas in Tokyo with many skyscrapers.

The Tokyo air raids from May to August 1945 destroyed almost 90% of the buildings in the area in and around Shinjuku Station.[3] The pre-war form of Shinjuku, and the rest of Tokyo, for that matter, was retained after the war because the roads and rails, damaged as they were, remained, and these formed the heart of the Shinjuku in the post-war construction. Only in Kabuki-cho was a grand reconstruction plan put into action.[4]

The present ward was established on March 15, 1947 with the merger of the former wards of Yotsuya, Ushigome, and Yodobashi. It served as part of the athletics 50 km walk and marathon course during the 1964 Summer Olympics.[5]

In 1991, the Tokyo Metropolitan Government moved from the Marunouchi district of Chiyoda to the current building in Shinjuku. (The Tokyo International Forum stands on the former site vacated by the government.)

[edit] EconomyMany companies have their headquarters or Tokyo offices in Shinjuku.

Seiko Epson's Tokyo office is in the Shinjuku NS Building in Nishi-Shinjuku.[6]
Atlus has its headquarters in Kagurazaka.[7]
Nissin Foods's Tokyo offices are in Shinjuku.[8]
Airtransse, a regional airline, has its headquarters near Shinjuku Gyoen.[9]
Futabasha has its headquarters in Higashigokenchō, Shinjuku[10]
Yoshinoya has its headquarters in the Da Vinci Shinjuku Building (ダヴィンチ新宿ビル, Davinchi Shinjuku Biru?) in Shinjuku.[11]
H.I.S.'s headquarters is in the Shinjuku Oak Tower in Nishi-Shinjuku[12]
Jorudan has its headquarters in Shinjuku.[13][14]
In March 1990 the headquarters of Bandai Visual moved to the Shinjuku neighborhood in Shinjuku Ward. In August 1991 the headquarters moved to Taitō, Tokyo.[15] Previously the headquarters of MOS Burger were in Shinjuku.[16]

[edit] Government and politics
Shinjuku City OfficeLike the other wards of Tokyo, Shinjuku has a status equivalent to that of a city. The current mayor is Hiroko Nakayama. The ward council (区議会, kugikai?) consists of 38 elected members; the Liberal Democratic Party and New Komeitō Party together currently hold a majority. The Democratic Party of Japan, Japanese Communist Party and the Social Democratic Party are also represented together with four independents. Shinjuku's city office (区役所, kuyakusho?) is located on the southeastern edge of Kabukichō.

Shinjuku is also the location of the metropolitan government of Tokyo. The governor's office, the metropolitan assembly chamber, and all administrative head offices are located in the Tokyo Metropolitan Government Building.

The Surprise of a Knight。
Francesco Scavullo,Bruce of L.A.

How to Choose a Health Insurance Plan

Choosing the proper health insurance plan is a huge decision for most families. There used to be one type of service (now known as a fee-for-service plan), but since then we've been bombarded by choices. Today, trying to find the best plan for you or your family is enough to make you reach inside your medicine cabinet. You need to know what options are available to you, what each of those options offers and whether or not you can afford them. In this article, we'll look at the two primary issues that most people face when trying to find the right health insurance plan: budget and need.
Keep in mind that there is no one-size-fits-all health insurance plan. To find out what kind of coverage you need, and to avoid paying for what you don't, there are several questions you should carefully consider before you sign on the dotted line. Once you've settled on a plan, it's your responsibility to thoroughly understand it and follow its guidelines. The variety of plans seems endless, so where do you begin to make sense of them all? There are several key factors to consider when purchasing a health care plan -- we'll wade through these factors to help you find out how to choose the best one for you and your family.
Finding the intersection of budget and need can be tough. The needs of a healthy twentysomething are vastly different from the needs of a family of four, which are vastly different from a baby boomer entering retirement. Luckily there are good options for each situation. Every kind of health insurance plan, be it a managed-care or fee-for-service plan, has different ways of handling every different kind of scenario. First, you need to determine what kind of coverage you need and whether or not you can afford it.
Let's take a look at the questions raised by finances. Those of us who are operating under a low financial ceiling need to pay careful attention to where our health care dollars are going. Do you visit the doctor very often? How much of a monthly premium can you afford? Can you meet your deductible in order to get full coverage? If you choose a managed-care plan, how much more will it cost to go out of the provider network? Is there a limit to the amount you'll have to pay and to the amount paid to you by your insurance carrier?

Of course, these financial concerns are made doubly important when you begin to factor in your own health care needs. Are you caring for any dependents? Do you have any pre-existing conditions? How comprehensive do you want your plan to be? Do you need dental and vision plans? Do you have a chronic illness that requires monthly treatment? What are your month-to-month medical expenses, like prescription drugs? What could happen should you require surgery? What if you were injured in an accident? How much preventative care do you want?
These are tough questions, but it's never a good idea to bury your head in the sand, especially where health is concerned. With careful consideration of these questions, you and your family will be able to find that health care sweet spot -- where you get the coverage you need at prices you can afford.
In the next section we'll dissect each of these plans.

WWDC clashes with E3 as Apple unveils June 6 – 10 dates
It’s not unusual for major industry events to cluster around certain dates – there was only a week separating Mobile World Congress in Barcelona and GDC 2011 in San Francisco back in February.
The idea of two major conferences clashing, however, is a lot more complicated.
Yet Apple’s news that this year’s Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC 2011) will run for five days from June 6 puts it in direct competition with what is the industry’s biggest annual shebang: E3.
iPhone 5 unveiling?
Taking place in San Francisco’s Moscone West until June 10, it’s widely expected that Apple will unveil the next iteration of iPhone at the conference, though – as is the norm – the firm is keeping its cards close to its chest as to just what will be announced.
“At this year’s conference we are going to unveil the future of iOS and Mac OS,” said Philip Schiller, Apple’s senior VP of worldwide product marketing.
“If you are an iOS or Mac OS X software developer, this is the event that you do not want to miss.”
Tale of two cities
The problem is, games developers and journalists may find E3 2011, which will be taking place almost 400 miles south in Los Angeles, a far harder proposition to ignore.
Running between June 7 and June 9, E3 is traditionally used as the opportunity for most of the industry’s major announcements.
And, crucially for the handheld sector, this year’s event is likely to play host to developments surrounding Sony’s NGP (and, more specifically for mobile, PlayStation Suite), 3DS and perhaps even links between Microsoft’s Windows Phone 7 and Xbox 360.
If nothing else, it looks like there will be plenty of business when it comes to mid-week flights between SFO and LAX.(source:pocketgamer)

How To Choose An Airline

How To Choose An Airline: 7 Tips for a Smart Flight
The last installment of our Fly Safe, Fly Smart series tells you how to pick between airlines when you don't recognize the names.

American, United, Delta. Yeah, yeah, we can debate, but they're peas in a pod. But if you find a cheap fare on Allegiant, or Porter, or Fly540, what are you supposed to think?
Smaller airlines come and go. Back in 2005, I wrote an article about flying on smaller airlines -- of the 13 companies mentioned, three have gone out of business and one now only flies charters. Meanwhile, new airlines keep cropping up, like Porter in Canada and VivaAerobus in Mexico. With an airline industry permanently in flux, don't worry if you've never heard an airline's name before -- rather, check it out. Here are some tools and tips for giving an airline the once-over.
Check the Blacklists
The U.S. and EU governments both keep lists of airlines they consider unsafe. The U.S. government actually blacklists entire countries (Read the U.S. blacklist here) based on assessments of the countries' airline-safety standards. The agency offers the results as an Excel spreadsheet with the unsafe nations listed as category 2. Right now, that includes Belize, Congo, Gambia, Ghana, Haiti, Honduras, Indonesia, Israel, Kiribati, Mexico, Nauru, Nicaragua, Paraguay, Philippines, Serbia, Swaziland, Ukraine, Uruguay, and Zimbabwe. Carriers from those countries aren't allowed to set up new service to the U.S. until they improve safety standards, although they can maintain existing service.
The EU keeps a blacklist of individual airlines, which you can find at Air-Valid.co.uk (www.air-valid.co.uk/airlines-blacklisted.html). These specific airlines aren't allowed to operate in the EU, so you can pretty much assume they're not the best of the global array. The vast majority of the airlines are smaller African and Asian airlines, but there are a few more prominent players on there such as Iran Air and Philippine Airlines.
Ignore the Boards
Don't turn to boards like TripAdvisor or our own forums for good advice on airlines. People on forums tend to draw wild conclusions from single events -- saying, for instance, that you should never fly United Airlines because of one incident involving a rude flight attendant or a poorly-handled cancellation. Every airline has made mistakes, and you need to take a longer view.
How About Awards?
Skytrax (http://www.airlinequality.com/), Zagat (www.zagat.com/promo.aspx?pn=132), Conde Nast (www.concierge.com/tools/travelawards/readerschoice/transportation) and JD Power and Associates (www.jdpower.com/travel/ratings/airline-ratings) all take that longer view. Of the bunch, Skytrax (a UK-based consultant to airlines) has by far the widest range of airlines listed, rating them from one to five stars and giving them sub-ratings based on everything from food quality to "assisting parents with children." Skytrax's set of hundreds of traveler reviews is also a great exception to the "don't pay attention to forums" rule, as their reviews are mostly from experienced road warriors.
According to Skytrax, the finest airlines in the world are Asiana, Cathay Pacific, Kingfisher, Malaysia, Qatar and Singapore. Among the lowest-rated airlines is one very popular European one -- Ryanair -- chosen in large part because of its famously, abysmally poor customer service.
Hedge Bets With Alliances
The major U.S. airlines are members of three alliances: OneWorld (http://www.oneworld.com/), SkyTeam (http://www.skyteam.com/) and Star Alliance (http://www.staralliance.com/). If you're flying on a foreign airline that makes you a little nervous -- say, Aeroflot -- see if you can get a seat on that flight using its American partner's code (in this case, Delta's), which makes the American partner partly responsible for getting you to your destination. For more on that trick, see my article "How to Decode Code Shares."
Scope Out Safety
If your airline hasn't won any awards, but it isn't on any blacklists, you might want to scope out the airline's safety record. For more than a decade now, AirSafe.com (www.airsafe.com/airline.htm) has been tracking air crashes and other safety-related incidents. They can tell you the rate of fatal events per million flights, and when the airline had its most recent incident.
You have to be smart about this data. Midwest Airlines, for instance, appears to have a high fatal accident rate -- but that's just because of one accident back in 1985. That said, a combination of a high fatal-event rate plus recent fatal events might give you pause.
Make Note of Fees
Smaller airlines, especially low-cost ones, may have different baggage allowances or fees than larger carriers. If you're assembling a multi-airline itinerary, pay attention to those fees. The most notorious culprit is Europe's Ryanair, which has very low base fares but also very low allowed baggage weights. It doesn't make sense to book an itinerary which would force you to re-pack your baggage when you change planes.
Compare Seats
If you're trying to decide between two airlines which are "just fine," you can easily see which one has comfier seats, better food and in-flight entertainment. Seatguru (http://www.seatguru.com/) gives you seating charts and details of in-flight entertainment for many popular airlines and aircraft. (To figure out what kind of plane you'll be on, see my earlier story, "Secrets of Airline Seating.")
The rather messy, French-run website Air-valid.co.uk has information on seat pitch and in-flight entertainment for more international carriers as well as a sort of comparison engine that gives you a bit more information.

Find Which Subwoofer

Find Which Subwoofer You Want There are many subwoofers out there, all can do what they are made to do which is make bass. But many produce a different kind of bass and at a different quality.

1
Finding the right subwoofer can be a difficult task. The first thing you should do is to take a piece of paper and a pencil and write down how much you are willing to spend on a subwoofer. (remember to include the price of the box). You might want to include the price of the amplifier you are going to use to as many amps work better with different subwoofers.
2
If you have a lower price range, do some research on crutchfield.com for that price range and then look over the internet to see if crutchfield has the lowest price for the subwoofer you want.
3
If your price is higher and crutchfield doesn't carry that type of sub, then considering looking on a different site that specializes in selling subwoofers or ebay.
4
Once you have found the subwoofer you want, do some research on the manufacturers website for the best type of enclosure and its RMS wattage. Try to find a matching amplifier for the sub based on this RMS wattage.
5
If you want two subwoofers, make sure they are the same type as running two different types of subwoofers can be dangerous for a car audio system. It is pretty in depth to explain it but it just isn't a good idea.
6
If you have any questions or just want some general information, crutchfield.com has a wonderful free customer support that is very helpful.

Aroma Massage

What Is Aroma Massage?

Aroma massage is an effective way to relieve stress and promote well-being. Aromatherapy is the art of healing with essential oils. These essences have been extracted from plants and have different therapeutic properties. Massage is just one of the many ways to use aromatherapy. By mixing different oils together, you can create a perfect blend for your needs.
Benefits
Aromatherapy massage promotes overall well-being and can also be used as a tool for relaxation and stress relief. Another benefit is that aroma massage can be used for healing purposes. While a professional massage therapist can provide the most thorough services, there are a few massage techniques that are easily learned for the added benefit of being able to perform aroma massage in your own home for a spouse or loved one.
Essential Oils
Essential oils are used in aromatherapy massage and are chosen according to the intended effect of the massage. Scents such as lavender and chamomile are calming and relive stress, while citrus scents are energizing. Peppermint essential oil is commonly used for pain relief and is another oil with an energizing effect.
Carrier Oils
Blending massage oil involves choosing an appropriate essential oil and a proper carrier oil to dilute it in. Choosing a type of carrier oil depends on the type of massage being performed. Sweet almond oil is suitable for all skin types and can help relieve itching, soreness and dryness. Aloe vera oil is another oil that is suitable for all skin types and is also soothing. Avocado oil is thick and moisturizing, which makes it wonderful for facial massage or blended with lighter oils for body massage.
Types
Aroma massage can be performed on virtually any part of the body, including the face, feet, calves and back. Facial massage helps to relieve headaches and improve complexion. Massaging other parts of the body, especially the back and feet, is also an effective way to relieve chronic pain. Aromatherapy massage can be used on any part of the body as a way to promote relaxation and relieve stress.
Warnings
Avoid the eyes, mouth and nose when performing a facial massage. Pregnant women should use caution, as some essential oils, such as lavender, are not safe for developing fetuses. Be aware that some essential oils affect people in different ways, so use your best judgment if an aromatherapy blend isn't working for you or if it is having an adverse effect.

How to Find The Best LED TV

How to Find The Best LED TV

There are many things to consider when searching for the best deals and features in an LED TV set. Before taking the plunge on the first offer that comes your way, consider these aspects in order to know how to find the best LED TV. Doing so will result in an LED TV, which is reasonably priced, which offers extensive feature sets and has a high quality display.

Step 1: Assess the Budget

The market is flooded with numerous commercials promising the best and latest features in LED TV sets. Yet, what is important to see if the price is compatible with individual budget. There is no point setting hopes on a TV, which is priced way over what the person can afford. What is important is to set a realistic expectation of what is acceptable in terms of spending on a new LED TV set.

Step 2: Determine Appropriate Screen Size

Most people have the misconception that it is only the bigger screen sizes that will provide amazing picture quality. After all, it is as close to a theater experience as possible. Yet, it is vital to have a practical perspective when it comes to screen size. This approach would help on how to find the best LED TV and find the perfect screen size for the home. If the room is too small, it may not accommodate a screen size of 55 or 60 inches. Another aspect to consider would be the overall viewing distance from the screen. The screen size should facilitate a comfortable viewing experience.

Step 3: Picture Quality and Resolution

What sets apart a mediocre LED TV from a high quality one is the features it comes with. Picture quality is one of the first things to assess in a prospective LED TV. Full array LED TVs are better because they provide uniform lighting across the entire screen, facilitating vivid imagery and picture clarity. Resolution is another aspect to think of when wondering how to find the best LED TV. Check for higher resolution LED TVs such as 1920x1080p. These provide the best quality imagery on screen.
Step 4: Contrast Ratio and Sound
The next step is to check the sound quality in the LED TV. Some TVs come with inbuilt speakers, which are powerful enough to deliver high quality sound. Other sets might need extra speakers to intensify sound quality. Some of the latest LED sets such as those from Hitachi offer surround sound experience. In such cases, there is no need to purchase any additional speakers. One tip on how to find the best LED TV is to look for a TV with a high level of contrast ratio. This results in intense whites and blacks providing exceptional viewing experience.
In addition to the above tips, it also helps to check the manufacturer’s reputation, how many years they have been manufacturing LED TVs, as well as online consumer opinions. The best technique on how to find the best LED TV is to browse through user reviews online to arrive at the best models.

Patong Beach,PhuketPhuket (ภูเก็ต) [1], pronounced (roughly) "pu-ged", is Thailand's largest island. It is 48 km in length, 21 km at its widest, and is in Southern Thailand, on the west-facing Andaman Sea coastline, suspended from the southern tip of Phang Nga Province by a pair of short but substantial road bridges.

[edit] Cities
Only a few of Phuket's cities are not on the beach.
Phuket Town — The administrative center of the province, and the island's main population center. Has the cheapest accommodation, but no beaches.
Chalong Bay — On the east coast, home to Phuket's most popular yacht anchorage and the primary gateway to the islands off Phuket

[edit] Understand
Phuket nestles in balmy Andaman Sea waters on Thailand's Indian Ocean coastline 862 kilometres south of Bangkok.
Phuket formerly derived its wealth from tin and rubber, and enjoyed a rich and colourful history. The island was on one of the major trading routes between India and China, and was frequently mentioned in foreign trader’s ship logs.
In recent times, though, Phuket's top earner has been tourism, which has transformed the island into Thailand's wealthiest province. The west coast of Phuket was hit severely by the Indian Ocean tsunami of December 2004, but almost no evidence of the damage now remains.
Phuket enjoys great popularity as a travel destination. Most beaches are on the west coast, with Phuket Town to the south-east and the airport in the north.
[edit] Climate
Phuket is hot and humid throughout the year. The hot season is generally considered to be from March to early May. During the summer monsoon season from May to October, mornings and afternoons are still sunny and clear, but it tends to rain in the evenings and water clarity goes down. Locals consider November to February the "cool" season, and the weather is quite tolerable, much more so than in the tourism centers around the Gulf coast. It's comparable to Florida's summer weather in temperature and intensity of rain storms: 25-33 deg C, flying clouds, short and thunderous rainfalls in the afternoons and evenings. Surfing is possible off the western beaches.
[edit] Culture
Phuket is a melting pot of Buddhists, Thai-Chinese, Muslims and even sea gypsies. The majority of the population in the rural areas is Muslim. Outside of the provincial town, the rural folk speak with a thick Southern dialect which is difficult for even other Thais to understand. The provincial town’s economy having boomed over the past decade has led to a lot of the youngsters leading similar lives to those in Bangkok. Altogether, the lifestyle of the urban Thai-Chinese resembles that of Bangkokians.

[edit] Get in
[edit] By plane
The compact Phuket International Airport [2](IATA: HKT) (ICAO: VTSP) is in the north of the island, and is Thailand's second largest hub, second only to Bangkok. There are very frequent flights to/from Bangkok as well as direct flights to many other airports in the region, including Singapore and Kuala Lumpur, and direct charters to Europe and Australia in the high season.
[edit] International flights
Australia - V Australia [3], Jetstar [4] and Strategic Airlines [5], have direct flights from/to major cities in Australia.
Malaysia - AirAsia [6], FireFly [7] and Malaysia Airlines [8] have direct flights from/to Kuala Lumpur.
Singapore - SilkAir [9] has 32 flights a week. Low cost alternatives are Thai AirAsia [10] and Tiger Airways [11]. In addition, Jetstar [12]flies there too!
Indonesia - AirAsia [13] flies from/to Jakarta and Denpasar Bali, and often this is the cheapest connection between Thailand and Java and more eastern parts of Indonesia (promotional fares are often $30-50 for 3 hours flight). They fly to Medan on Sumatra, as well.
Germany - Air Berlin [14] has nonstop flights to Berlin(ends 26 April) and Munich.
Qatar - Qatar Airways [15] operates direct daily flights from/to Doha.
Korea - Asiana Airlines [16] non stop services from Seoul with connections from New York.
Other low cost direct connections include Hong Kong, Macau, Seoul and Busan
[edit] Charter flights
There are some charter flights in high season from European and Asian countries such as Sweden, Taiwan, Japan, etc. The airlines charge a very cheap fare.
[edit] Domestic flights
Several budget/domestic airlines fly here, including JetStarAsia [17], Air Asia [18]. Tickets from Bangkok can cost under 1000 baht one-way if booked well in advance, or around 2000 baht (including taxes) if bought on the day.
Thai Airways [19] flies from Bangkoks Suvarnabhumi airport several times every day, as well as once daily from Chiang Mai (but there are no direct flights in the opposite direction). Additionally, they sell tickets from/to many domestic and international destinations with stopover in Bangkok - which are usually cheaper (especially international) than if you book separate tickets. Cheapest (non-exchangeable and non-refundable - though taxes are refunded even in the unfortunate case of no-show, if you call them later) one-way ticket from Bangkok, as of April 2008, costs 2320 baht - worth checking if you book just a few days before flight, as low-cost airlines may cost only 200-300 baht less in this situation, but you get world-famous Thai Airways service, and free onboard meals too.
Air Asia [20]. fly from Phuket to Chiang Mai direct, twice a day at 10.35am and 7.20pm affording an opportunity to combine a beach holiday with experiencing the wildlife and exotic cultures of Northern Thailand. From Chiang Mai top Phuket flights depart at 1pm and 9.45pm. Bangkok Airways [21] has a monopoly on direct flights between Phuket and U- Tapao (Pattaya / Sattahip) and Ko Samui. They also have 4 daily flights from Bangkok - fares are around 1700 baht inclusive of taxes when purchased on the airline website.
Happy Air (Phuket to Ranong also Bangkok to Ranong) http://www.happyair.co.th/ with service to and from both Bangkok Main International airport and Phuket International Airport to Ranong (Koh Phayam and Koh Chang - Andaman Sea side are 20 min. from Ranong Airport by boat. As of January 2011 daily flights
[edit] Airport Transport
To get from the airport to your destination, there are several options:
Municipal a/c Airport Bus service (every day 6:30-20:45, every 60-90 minutes) to Phuket Town bus station costs 85 baht and takes one hour. Local buses run from there and Ranong Street Market to all the major beaches until around 18:00 for about 30-40 THB. To and from Patong and Kathu the best transfer point is at the Surakul Stadium. After getting off the respective bus just cross the street and wait for the continuing bus there. It is a very convenient and comfortable spot, with no touts or hustlers, plenty of shade and a mini mart for drinks and snacks. -- The bus will stop anywhere along its route upon signalling the driver ("bus hiking"). A very informative website is here: http://www.airportbusphuket.com/.
Minibus services (basically door-to-door share taxis) are a good value. They charge 150-250 baht per seat, and will get you to your destination much faster than the municipal/government buses. To Patong 150 is typical; to Kata Beach, 180. When you get off the plane, don't dally, because when the minibuses fill up, they leave. If you miss the first group of them, you may have to wait until the next plane comes in, because they don't leave until they're full. Note that the minibuses will stop at a travel agent about halfway to Patong. They'll ask everyone to get out (you don't have to) and then they'll ask you where you're staying, and they'll try to sell you a hotel. You're NOT obligated to use the hotels they push. Just say you already booked a hotel, and tell them the name. They will inform the driver, and he/she will drop you off at the hotel. This is a little annoying, but it's over in 10 minutes, and you're on your way again. Any travel agent can arrange a minibus ride for the way back to the airport.
Metered (yellow) taxis - Turn right as you exit the airport building (ignore the touts) and you'll see a stand at the end of the walkway. You tell your destination to the staff at the stand and they will give you a paper with the taxi driver number for you to keep in case you need to report a problem. Fares to destinations in Phuket cost around 400 baht and up. The rate is what is displayed by the meter plus 100-baht airport fee. The meter will start with a 50 baht display. You may stumble upon a freelance taxi driver that will take you from the Airport to Patong for the flat fee of 450 baht. If the driver is pleasant, you may wish to ask for his mobile number for the return trip later. The same driver can take you from Patong to Phuket Town for 350 to 400 baht.
Limousine (blue) taxis from the airport are expensive, costing 600-700 baht to Patong Beach or Bt800 Phuket Town. The airport co-op booth tucked away towards the back is a little cheaper than the competition. Despite the name, most "limousines" are Toyota Camrys with leather seats, though you may be lucky and get a Mercedes. It is likely that your "limousine" will also stop at a travel agent in order to sell you hotel rooms and/or tours. Before you purchase your fare, insist that you do not want to stop at any travel agency along the way. (They will try to legitimise stopping at the travel agency by insisting that "the driver must sign in" or "the driver needs to stop here for directions")
Departure tax is now included in the ticket price. The airport is notionally divided into Terminal 1 and 2, with some charter and low-cost operators using the second, but these are only a few hundred meters apart and connected by an air-conditioned walkway.
[edit] By train
There are no direct train services to Phuket. But many trains leave from Bangkok central station going south all the way to Singapore. The most comfortable are the sleeper trains (~685 THB for a berth in a 2nd class a/c car. Travellers by train must get off at Phun Phin railway station in Surat Thani province and continue for another 5 hours by regular bus to Phuket. Do not buy the bus ticket until you actally see the bus and can make sure it is not standing room only as it picks up passengers at the popular Ko Samui ferry. If full wait for the next one. See Surat Thani for more details.
[edit] By bus
Buses to mainland destinations including Bangkok, Chumphon, Hat Yai, Krabi, Phang Nga, Ranong, Satun, Sungai Kolok and Surat Thani use the BKS terminal off Thanon Phang Nga in Phuket Town.
The most reliable buses from Bangkok are the public BKS [22] buses from the Southern Bus Terminal to Phuket. The journey takes 13 hours. There are also some private bus companies, Phuket Travel Tour, Phuket Central Tour and Phuket Travel Service [23]. Khao San Road operations have a bad reputation for theft, often turn out to include a "surprise" transfer to a minibus at Surat Thani, and are best avoided.
From Phuket bus terminal to your final destination, you can take a motorcycle taxi, tuk-tuk, meter-taxi, or bus. A motorcycle taxi into Phuket Town will be about 10-20 baht; to most beaches 100-200 baht (negotiable).
A local bus to one of the main beaches will cost around 15-30 baht. It's not unusual for the tuk-tuk drivers at the bus terminal to tell arriving travellers that the local bus service has finished, even though it hasn't. If you are of the hiking/backpacking type, the local bus station, which will take you to Patong Beach is about twenty minutes away. When exiting the bus terminal, make a right onto Phang-Nga Rd. Continue down Phang-Nga until it terminates at Yaowarat Rd., then turn left. Within a few steps you will see a roundabout. Once at the roundabout, keep right. By keeping right, you will find Ranong Rd. Within 100 to 200 meters you will find the local bus stop.
Before exiting the Phuket bus terminal, grab a free Phuket map from the information window. While supplies may always not be on hand, the map is a great way to get your bearing before jumping-off.
[edit] By car
Phuket is directly connected to the mainland by the Thao Thepkasattri Bridge. From Bangkok, take Highway 4 through Nakhon Pathom, Prachuap Khiri Khan, Chumphon, thence through Ranong province’s Kra Buri and Kapoe districts, Phang-nga province’s Takua Pa and Thai Muang districts and onto Phuket island. The total distance is 862km.
[edit] By boat
Ferry services connect from Rassada Port in Phuket Town to Ko Phi Phi and on to Krabi on the mainland twice a day, taking 90 minutes and costing 350/650 baht one-way/return, for each leg. It's usually a pleasant ride, but can be rather bumpy when it's windy.
There are also speedboats to Ko Racha (2 hours), the Similan Islands (about 3 hours) and other islands in the high season only.( Cost 2200-1900 ). Boats and yachts can be chartered at Chalong Bay, the Boot Lagoon, the Yacht Haven and Royal Phuket Marina.
It's possible to visit Phuket by cruise ship. For cruises from Singapore, try Star Cruises [24].
[edit] Get around

Phuket-style tuk-tukPhuket is a large island and you need some form of transport to get around. Public transport is very limited and taxis and tuk-tuks are the only practical means, Another, but quite dangerous option is rent your own wheels.
Hotels generally offer shuttle bus services into Phuket Town, and also have taxi and car hire facilities. Jeeps and motorbikes can be hired from various shops in Phuket and at the main beaches. Taxis are plentiful in town. Tel: 0 7635 1347, 0 7635 1349 for more information.
People traveling with babies can rent baby gear locally and don't necessarily have to bring baby equipment such as strollers on the plane. One of the companies offering this service is called Phuket Baby Rentals. [25]
In Town:
No public buses, but there are Songthaew which operate a communal service. Just tell your destination to the driver. In town journeys cost 20-30 baht.
From Town to Beaches:
There are local-bus services between town and tourist beaches. Local buses leave for the beaches at the market on Ranong Road at half-hour intervals until 6 p.m. After that, you must hire a taxi. Bus fares range from 25-35 baht.
[edit] By Songthaew or bus
Public transport within Phuket is limited to a radial network connecting Phuket Town to the beaches. There are a few full-size buses, but most lines are operated with songthaews, basically converted pick-up trucks serving as buses. The fare is 25-35 baht up on distance, and there are no set stops - they pick up and drop off as requested. Most local bus services stop at around 18:00.
Most operate from the local market (Talad Sod or Ban San); those to major beaches go via Phuket Town bus terminal. The main lines connect to Patong, Kata-Karon, Chalong Bay, Rawai-Nai Han beach, Panwa (Aquarium), Mai Khao, and Surin-Kamala. There are very few "cross-beach" connections, and eg. traveling from Surin to Patong (15 min by taxi) requires an hour-long detour via Phuket Town.
Upon your return, though, often the bus will drop you off not at the main terminal but at a bus stop somewhere in the middle of Phuket town, where travelers will immediately be set upon by the rip-off tuk-tuk and taxi drivers. Tourist beware!
[edit] By taxi
Phuket has three types of taxi - millions (or so it seems) of small songthaew-style minivans (usually bright red, occasionally bright yellow) called Tuk Tuks, a much smaller number of conventional sedan-style taxis (yellow and red, with a "TAXI-METER" sign on top), and random indistinguishable vehicles that serve as unofficial taxis.
The minivans are universally referred to as tuk-tuks (even though they have four wheels, not three). They have no meter, and their drivers are notoriously mercenary, so always agree a price beforehand and do bargain hard. Short hops around town shouldn't cost more than 40 baht, but good luck getting from Patong to Phuket Town for under 400 baht. Tuk-Tuks should be avoided whenever possible, these are run by what locals call the "Thai Mafia" and charge you 200 baht for less than 1km runs.
Metered taxis are a much better option when available, being safer, more comfortable, and usually cheaper than tuk-tuks. However, they're often hard to find, and during peak periods their drivers will also ignore the meter and demand flat fares. You can arrange one by telephone on 0-76-232157.
Finally, many beaches have little shacks with "TAXI" signs, sometimes unofficially supported by a hotel, offering quick transport at high prices. They are usually pricier than the tuk-tuks, with most fares exceeding 500 baht, but they are usually air-conditioned and more comfortable.
[edit] By motorbike taxi
There are also motorbike taxis (motosai). While you should never hop on the back of just anyone's motorbike, motorbike taxi drivers wear bright numbered vests and are usually the cheapest way to go. However, these are more dangerous than a Tuk Tuk, for obvious reasons, and are not comfortable for long trips. However, if you just need to get around town, they are a great way to go.
[edit] By car or bike
Renting a car or motorbike to explore the island on your own is a cost-effective way of getting off the beaten track. However, given the driving habits of most locals and the resulting carnage on Phuket's roads every year, the risks do demand careful consideration. Driving habits are Thai style ignoring all the rules and keeping going at all costs, not much worse than Naples, but like there it keeps traffic moving. Traffic lights have just made things worse in the last few years.
Due to the geography of the island with its winding hilly roads and poor vision, Phuket certainly gets more than its fair share of accidents. In fact, the death and injury statistics are more than high. More than 10,000 people are injured and over 250 killed every year in road accidents in Phuket. Nine out of ten accidents involve motorbikes.
Drive very defensively at first and watch what the locals do. Of course, it helps if you are accustomed to driving on the left side of the road, which in itself could be enough to distract some North American or European drivers. Be aware that many motorcyclists will drive on the wrong side of the road to cover short distances, and undertaking is a very common occurrence on Phuket roads. Driving under the influence of alcohol is both illegal and dangerous, and driving at night also increases the risk of accidents — even if you're sober, many others aren't.
Motorcycle and scooter rentals start at around 200 baht/day, coming down to 150 baht/day for rentals of a week or more. Although both drivers and pillion passengers are required to wear helmets, this rule is sometimes ignored by locals, and farang riding around without one are more likely to be taxed 300-500 baht by the police if caught. You must carry a valid driving license with you, or you'll be slapped with a 500 baht fine. Police can check for motorcycle licences, and not having the correct licence type may result in a fine. Your licence will be confiscated if you're fined, and returned when you pay the fine at the appropriate police station. There can be police check-points on the way, and regular check-point locations include the northern end of Patong Beach Road, Chalong Circle and the northern end of Karon Beach. If you do wear a helmet chances of being stopped should be low though.
Renting a car usually costs between 1000-1200 baht if you want to go for an ecomonical one like a Toyota Vios (stay away from the jeeps). Several rental companies are located in and around the airport. Avis is located within the airport while Hertz, National and Sixt are located within walking distance of the airport (across the road). Bookings can be made online for these. Reputable local car rental companies, which are often a little cheaper, include:
Sutin Car Rentals [26]
Braun Car Rentals [27]
Via Car Rentals [28]
Car Hire Phuket [29]
Be careful to check the level of insurance on a hire car, as many local companies say they have 'full' insurance when in fact it is only a very basic level. Motorcycle rental generally includes little or no insurance, so take extra care if you decide to opt for the motorbike option.
If you're travelling with a young family you may find that car rental companies will not have child equipment. If needed you can hire infant/child car seats from the following local company:
Phuket Baby Rentals [30]
[edit] By boat
For a bit of island hopping the longtail boats are a great way to do so. Prices must be negotiated and are app. 500 Baht per hour or no more than 1,800 Baht per day.
[edit] Talk
Phuket is one of Thailand's premier tourist destinations and (basic) English is very widely spoken, especially in the beach areas. That said, even a little Thai will draw smiles and can be useful in the less touristed areas of Phuket Town.

[edit] Watersports

PhuketScuba diving, snorkeling, SNUBA, yachting, jet-skiing and parasailing are the most popular activities on the island. Most dive sites are off nearby islands, but distances are fairly short and there are dozens of dive shops and boats to cater to your needs, mostly based near Chalong Pier. In addition there are good snorkeling locations located off several of the most popular beaches. Seek local information regarding riptides, currents, and safe snorkeling areas.
Sailing and Yachting
Phuket has become the sailing and yachting center of Thailand and adjacent countries. It's home of Six Senses Phuket Raceweek [31], King's Cup Regatta [32], Phang Nga Bay Regatta [33], the Phuket International Boat Show (PIMEX) [34], 4 marinas, two yacht clubs - Ao Chalong Yacht Club (ACYC) [35] and Phuket Yacht Club (PYC) [36] and some well sheltered anchorages which are teeming with yachts. The marinas are all located at the eastern side of the island which makes them an ideal starting point to explore the nature wonders of the Phang Nga Bay. An entire fleet of traditional junk rigged boats is located there, offering day trips. But as well real sailing yachts are on offer for this. Phuket has sailing yachts of virtually every size and for all budgets on offer to explore the surrounding beautiful islands on a yacht charter. Sailing Thailand Island Cruises [37] operates a wide array of sailing catamarans from budget to luxury, most of them located in Chalong Bay. SweetDreamers [38] also offer many different sailing cruises from Chalong Bay in South East of Phuket. Small sailing craft like Hobie Cats and Lasers are available at most of the tourist hot spots on the west side, e.g. Patong and Kata.
Diving
Phuket Island has some decent dive sites and is center of diving in Thailand. The reefs around the area are in a healthy condition with both solid hard corals and colorfully soft corals. There is also an abundance of marine life. Most of the dive locations are suitable for all levels of divers but there are also some that are quite deep.
The most well-known dive site in the Phuket area is Racha Yai with its sloping rocky reefs and its plenitude of solid coral forests. There is also Ter Bay where there is an exciting wreck in the depths of 25-35 meters. The area south Racha Yai, Racha Noi, is a haven for experienced divers as the depths are greater and the currents stronger. The overall topography is strikingly different from Racha Yai with huge granite boulders. The diving in Racha Noi compared to Racha Yai is definitely more challenging but the rewards are far greater.
Just off Phuket, is the limestone island of Koh Doc Mai that soars vertically from the sea-bed. It is home to a diversity of fish and offers the opportunity to view leopard sharks, moray eels, octopus and turtles. Further afield, most particularly around the ever popular Phi Phi Islands in neighboring Krabi province, some 2 hours east of Phuket, and the Similan Islands, in Phang-nga province, some 110km northwest of Phuket, and the Raya Islands, 1-3 hours due south of Phuket, depending on the type of boat. Diving in Phuket’s warm clear blue waters is best from mid-October to May, when the calm seas and rain free days make Phuket diving a truly unique experience.

Windsurfing
Boards may be rented by the hour, half day, full day, or week at most major beaches. Tuition is available free.
Kitesurfing
Kites and boards can be rented by the hour or day, and tuition is available from a growing number of local providers. Popular kite surfing locations include the western coast and Chalong Bay.
Deep Sea Fishing
Daily tours are available, making early morning departures and late afternoon returns, mostly to lesser islands to fish for Red Snappers, Rainbow Runners and other game fish.
Sea Canoeing
This form of eco-tourism is available in several forms, as popular one-day tours, or more extended tours involving overnight camping on island beaches, and occurs principally in the neighboring Phang-nga Bay and Krabi province, where mangrove swamps and island grottoes are accessible only by canoe.
[edit][add listing] Buy
Phuket is the source of cultured pearls, nielloware, pewterware, ornaments and dried seafood. Specialist shops dealing in souvenir products can be found on Ratsada, Phang-nga, Montri, Yaowarat, and Tilok-U-thit roads, in Phuket Town, Thepkasattri Road, north of town and at the beach centres of Patong, Kata, Karon and Rawai.
Phuket's larger beaches are ravaged by ravenous hordes of touting tailors, who are certainly cheap, but will screw you over if they can — for example, suits done in 24 hours are usually just glued together and will fall apart the first time you bring them to a dry cleaner. Choose your own fabrics (you can buy them at Thalang Rd in Phuket Town), insist on multiple fittings and check the quality of work carefully. It makes little difference which tailor shop you choose, since they're all just sales fronts for a few central sweatshops.
There are two giant shopping malls in Phuket: Central Festival, at the northwest edge of Phuket Town, and Jungceylon, in Patong.

Food in Phuket is surprisingly cosmopolitan, especially in Patong Beach, as many foreigners have set up shop to cater to their fellow travellers. All the usual Thai favorites are of course still available, with a particular emphasis on seafood. See the individual town articles for detailed listings.
Phuket has its own style of preparation and cooking. Some interesting local dishes include:
Fried or Boiled Noodle Dishes (หมี่ผัดหรือหมี่น้ำแบบต่าง ๆ), usually with pork or chicken, are available at many noodle shops in the town such as Mi Ton Pho, Mi Sapam, Mi Ao Ke, Mi Hun Pa Chang, and etc.
Khanom Jin (ขนมจีน), a version of noodles taken at breakfast, usually served with a spicy curry sauce and fresh vegetables.
Nam Phrik Kung Siap (น้ำพริกกุ้งเสียบ) is a mixture of dried chili and smoked shrimps eaten with various fresh vegetables.
Cashew nuts and pineapples are grown in Phuket and available all year round. The nuts are available dried, fried or coated. Phuket pineapples are some of the most delectable, sweet and firm.

There are lot's of options available in Phuket. But for the more popular hotels and resorts in the better locations you should book at least a couple months in advance during high season (Nov-May). Cheapest air con room rates start at around 1,000 baht in beach locations or 500 baht away from the beach, with proper resorts starting just under 100 USD and going right up. Best rates are usually found online by searching and many hotels offer best rate guarantees when you book direct. Most of the time you will pay more if you walk in.
For long term residence 2-3 bedroom furnished houses available for 7000-10000 baht/month/up (only available far from the beach). In addition, luxury villas can be rented at a range of prices, depending on the season and the location and size. Pay-as-you-go SIM cards can be purchased for a few hundred baht, and local call charges range from 1 to 3 baht per minute depending on the package. You can also pre-purchase a Thai SIM card online [69]. Post-pay contracts are generally only available to Thai citizens and residents.
Mobile Internet
Mobile Internet is available from all providers, with True Move offering 3G access from a limited network of base stations on the eastern coast, including Patong, Kata and Karon. All other networks offer EDGE and/or GPRS access, so don't expect fast Internet connections on your mobile device. For email and basic surfing GPRS speeds are normally fine, but access to websites hosted outside Thailand can sometimes be slow.
Unlike many western countries, Thai networks bill mobile internet usage by duration rather than bandwidth, with PAYG users paying around 1 baht per minute. Most networks have PAYG monthly unlimited GPRS deals for around 750 baht, and you can easily purchase a SIM and the Internet package at one of the numerous phone shops around Phuket.
[edit] Stay safe
Particularly in the summer monsoon season, there are strong currents on many of the beaches and drownings are a depressingly common occurrence; four tourists died during a single 3-day stretch in June 2009. Heed the warning flags on popular beaches and play it safe if off the beaten track.
Crime as of late has definitely increased in the Phuket area among Farangs (tourists) and you should keep this is mind and be vigilant of anyone who wants to befriend you or trick you into gambling (which is illegal) and anything else you consider out of the ordinary. Katoeys (Ladyboys) are notorious for pick pocketing as you walk around the tourist areas at night. Also muggings do take place on regular occurrences. Avoid walking down unlit sois; stick to the main roads. If something looks/sounds too good to be true, it probably is.
Tourist police can be contacted locally using - 1155 - They have a good basic understanding of English, so if in trouble these people should be contacted. Thai police speak hardly any English and normally take the side of the locals even if it is their fault. Always insist on Tourist Police if you have any run-in with the Thai Police.
[edit] Stay healthy
Tap water is generally not potable. Liquids from sealed bottles nearly always are, and should be used wherever possible. Take care in restaurants and bars...some may use untreated/unsafe tap water to make ice for drinks that otherwise have bottled/safe ingredients. Some residents claim that ice with round holes is made by commercial ice makers who purify their water; others state that it is wise not to rely on that claim. Tap water in most hotels should not be used for drinking or brushing teeth unless explicitly labeled as safe.
